I think since your handy, that if you could get half or more of supplies used for low or no $$ at craigslist or something- you could make a decent patio but heres the rules I wrote down from an instruction at Lowes:
Lay out design, Remove Sod, 3-4" paver base (gravel-sand), shape w/ luan or 2x4s,
2-3" Polymeric sand (plastic sand that bonds and seals after wet), screed in sections to a level, compact, pull up shaping form, layout edging, set pavers, hose and sweep in
New idea: fabric, sand, new plastic formed paver base secrions, pavers, q
