[DIY] Re: new water line

It (used to be) that standard RESIDENTIAL lines & water meters were 1/2-inch; smallest pipe/ connection determines max flow

I have seen many commercial buildings, including w/ boiler rooms w/ 2-inch for potable, w/ separate lines & meters for lawn irrigation (that way, you do not pay sewer fees for irrigation, but much higher front end costs.) Fire sprinklers mains (commercial) normally 6" fed by 10-inch.

Neighbor years back was replacing supply w/ PVC from meter because he could not get proper pressures on new lawn irrigation system, I told him to do 3/4" or 1-inch, if only stronger, and would already be in place, if he later decided he needed a bigger meter connection. BUT it still connected to 1/2-in meter. I think he found a KINK in the old pipe he removed, and it (may?) have also been lead. Kink was what caused his problem, I believe.

thanks for the laugh!! I live in a very rural area in North Carolina population of my town is 400, the county is 26,000, and our plumbers are not licensed. The town guy was not very helpful he had to really think about whether we need a reducer at the meter....mind you he is our water guy and everything else. we are looking into putting it in ourselves and while we wait for the ditch witch to get here this weekend we are trying to find the leak if we can't we will just replace the whole thing. using 1" line.
