Some of the newer units are more powerful and sensitive then the older models. I have one that is about 8 years old and works well through plaster and lath. I think it is a Black and Decker and it also senses metal and power lines plus having a laser for level and lines. As I recall it cost about 40 or 50 dollars but over the years it has proven worth the money.
