[DIY] Re: Drain Vent

The purpose of a vent is to break the siphon action after the trap (a toilet has a built-in trap).  Without a source of air on the outgoing side of the trap the water in the trap will be siphoned out leaving a dry trap where sewer gases can enter the room.  Have you ever, in a older house perhaps, heard a sink go gurgle, gurgle, gurgle when draining?  That is air being pulled thru the trap.  I believe it is allowed to go up to 5 feet from the toilet to a vent.  Usually the other traps "dump" into a pipe where it continues up as a vent pipe.
