It is possible the local gas company will come out and check for a leak for free.
I’m a retired fireman and the local gas company’s detector would pick up lower levels than my equipment.
I would start with calling the gas supplier to see.
I really don’t think it is a gas leak. You can check connections by spraying with a soapy water solution. If a connection is leaking it will bubble.
Natural gas you can smell way before it gets to dangerous level.
