Following up on this, we bought a detector and it kept showing 0. However, the smell persisted -- faint, but still there from time to time. So we finally called the installer up and they came out. It was a different person from last time, and he showed me that the connection had no sealing tape on it (he said whoever did it did a very sloppy job). He said the hose and valve were in good shape and they found no trace of gas using the detection fluid.
So he said the sealing tape should do it if that's the issue. Otherwise, it's an appliance issue, so keep our noises peeled.
