I wrote to the company that makes one brand of Air Admittance Valves and the reply was:
If it is installed before the p-trap it is not vented and not code compliant.

The AIR ADMITTANCE VALVE is a SUBSTITUTE for a ROOF VENT and connects on drain/tank side of the P-trap; PURPOSE, being, (like the standard air vent, PREVENT A VACUUM that pulls the water out of the trap). Your Lowes clerk finally let you down, LOL :-)
