If I replace the valve the ball valve is the answer. BUT if I can clean the gate valve without removing it, the job gets a LOT simpler. My concern is damage to the water pipe while I try to take the gate valve apart.
Has anybody pulled apart a gate valve while it was still installed?

I agree w/ the recommendation to replace the gate valve w/ a Ball Valve.... much, much more reliable.
