I emailed the assistant Fire Marshall for the city and he replied:
I have just talked to a guy that installs alarm systems and he told me that they install the CO detectors at the ceiling. He has been told that the CO and air will mix and the detectors will pick it up. I figured since that is what this guy does all the time and deals with them he should know. Hope this helps.
