It appears that the detector should be placed from 5' above the floor or higher.  If your detector has a read-out indicating the CO level present, 5' allows you to easily read it.  CO IS slightly lighter than air.

Jim,

Why are you so adamant that CO is heavier than air when its density is less? In addition, since most of the CO generated from a fire would be warmer than surrounding air, it would tend to rise even more than density measurements would suggest.
