Use a heat gun to soften the putty or caulk but be careful not to either set wood on fire of break the glass.

The windows in this house were put in 41 years ago by the previous owner. The caulk is hard. Very hard white almost crunchy stuff. 

I am having a difficult time trying to chisel it off. Any suggestions?
