You might try Super Glue, I prefer to us Gorilla Brand as it is a gel and doesn't run allover the place. If you have a helper you might have then use a vac on the other side of the glass to carefully suck the glue into the crack. Use short suction bursts not one long vac as it will just suck the glue out the other side. Wind shields are double glass and the use a little suction to draw the glue into the crack. I think you will get the hang with a few trys.

Thank you Dale...I will remember your methods when I do the last 9 double hung windows.Probably wont get to upstairs 4 windows this fall.
Is there a product to put on those cracks to help keep them from growing? I know there is a product for windshields.
If there is nothing I will simply put a piece of packaging tape on those corners

I have used several methods to keep the heat away from the glass as well as possible. A metal shield that protects the glass and is angled to direct the heat directly onto the putty, a soaked piece of wood to absorb the heat as well as directing it toward the putty. Can't say which one was best but using no more heat than necessary and going slow was my best method.

Use a heat gun to soften the putty or caulk but be careful not to either set wood on fire of break the glass.

The windows in this house were put in 41 years ago by the previous owner. The caulk is hard. Very hard white almost crunchy stuff.
I am having a difficult time trying to chisel it off. Any suggestions?
