Thanks for everyones input. I did not care for the softener we had in CA nor the added salt - although I'm sure there are better models today. It was actually installed outside which I don't think they do in this area. Our water heater and pressure tank take up all the space in the utility closet so would have to figure out where we could place it. I've looked at the electromagnetic "faux" softeners - hard to sift through what is hype and what is not. Think I will try the Calgon for a few weeks and see if I notice a difference before we purchase anything and see about getting a water test kit.
