I own a condo in a large building. The toilets are mounted on the wall. (I suspect they are less stable than floor mounted ones.) The building's walls are metal studs with metal mesh and concrete(?) between. The wall behind the toilet is hollow (for pipes). The next door neighbor's bathroom is a mirror image of mine, and there are other condos upstairs and downstairs from me. I moved in in 1999 and had no problems with the original toilet, which was probably as old as the building (1970).
In 2009 the management company required us to replace our toilets with low flow toilets. Their "official" plumbing company offered a better price than I could find elsewhere, so I had them do it ($500+). In early 2011, when the toilet was less than 2 years old, it started leaking into the wall. There was water on the floor and the wall was deteriorating. I called the same plumbing company, who replaced a gasket, they said ($200+).
Recently I talked to a neighbor who said that he had the same problem, and that others have too. We are pretty peeved at the management company and the plumbing company (which has been making a lot of money from this).
(1) Any educated guesses on what the problem is? Most likely the toilets, or how they were installed, or what? They are from Crane but I don't know how to find the model.
(2) If I call a plumber (a *different* plumber) what do you think they would have to do to fix it, and how much might it cost?
(3) Off topic for this list, but can anyone recommend another list or other resources for dealing with the management company and the plumbing company?
