The longest I ever spent in Chicago was the all day experience it took to go through the Museum of Science and Industry the day after Thanksgiving 1957. I did however avail myself of the opportunity to spend a number of weekends in Milwaukee during the same period and that was a city I could have probably been happy in. Milwaukee was my only experience with a metropolitan area that was wired for both AC as well as Edison's DC distribution. I'm not sure how much of the old area was still operating on DC but I do know that the old WMCA had both AC and DC outlets in all the rooms, and the DC outlets were clearly marked as such. I was also there for the celebration the night after the Milwaukee Braves beat the Yankees in four straight, Wow what a night that was. They pulled the beer trucks down along the streets and handed out free bottles and drafts until well into the evening. All of the bars were handing out free Pabst and Schlitz having been assured that their inventories would be replaced free of charge by the breweries. It was estimated that over 100,000 men women and children crowded into a 12 block area that night and yet there was no violence and very minimal damage other than a lot of toilet paper streamers and empty beer bottles that needed to be cleaned up the next day. Talk about a party. There was also free beer every weekend if you wanted to take one of the Saturday morning brewery tours. After a while they would just take us straight to the brewery pub foregoing the usually necessary tour. Probably a good thing I did not go back after my several different periods of schooling at the great lakes naval base.
