A power surge will alter the voltage in the line and will effect the amperage an appliance pulls. The lower the voltage, the higher the amperage. AC feeds back in the wiring too, due to inductance in the various parts of the circuit. That causes all kinds of surging when the voltage fluctuates.
If it only happens once in a while, no problem but if it occurs all the time it could be a variety of problems.
Could be a failing breaker. Could be an element failing in the WH. Could be a poor connection too. A poor connection should be the first thing to look for. Loose lugs on the breaker or poor wire connections inside the WH are common problems.
Six years old is a very young WH. Mine is about 25 years old.

Hi, we live in a rural area. Our electric goes out. It surges, and has ruined a microwave, and washer.
