Sears Parts online has, or had, probably still does, parts diagrams and 
  schematics for a huge variety of appliances. All you need is the make 
  and model number. It can show you where all the connections are and 
  where abouts to look for the problem. Your thinking process is probably 
  leading you in the right direction.
  Found this using what you described. It has some schematics in it. It 
  shows that under a small panel door on the back of the stove there may 
  be a thermal fuse on Whirlpool electric ovens. Its on page 24. Worth 
  looking at.
