Thanks for the info terry. In the end, I caved and had to get a plumber. I just ran out of time. Seems that the old copper piece needed to be replaced as well. Not sure why in the end.
But next time I'll try again. I at least fixed 3 other issues with that sink, so I did save some money.

Is the copper clean, if not spin some emery around it, or sandpaper. Do you have the clear plastic washer taper facing the taper on the PVC pipe? If you have it backwards, it WILL leak. Hand tighten only.
Is it 1-1/4" copper, or 1-1/2"? (should be 1-1/2 for kitchen); IF it is 1-1/4", they make a special washer to use with the PVC to step it down to the 1-1/4" copper pipe (it has a smaller hole in the washer); If you are putting 1-1/2" washer on 1-1/4" pipe, it WILL Leak, but all you need is the right washer, installed correctly, to make it work. PVC pipe can be the same.
