Do you NEED it 18" long? you can always get a small plastic container and turn it upside down covering the box. A few holes to let the heat out, and you'll be set. I'm failry sure you can still use the remote if the plastic is clear. Test it first to see if it works before drilling holes. Of course another option would be to remove the front of the container.

Subject: [DIY] Need ideas to make a shelf
HI, My cat likes to sleep on the TV cable box. One problem with that is that a *lot* of cat hairs find their way into the box (all the vent holes are on the top). I just vacuumed out a ton of cat hair and I'm afraid it could be a fire hazard if I forget to do it sometime. Soooooooo I would like ideas on how to build a shelf that is 18" long, 10" deep and 3.5" high to the underside of the shelf that I can put over the box. There's no room on my entertainment center to move the cable box, which would be the ideal solution. If you can think of something that can be made from ready-made components, that would be great as I am a retired woman with zero woodworking skills (although I do have a drill, screwdrivers and hammer. Thanks.
