Yes, add it. Levelness is nice. But the issue is cement,
while wet, is not compatible with wood. There ought to
be a hardibacker brocure that shows it to have a built in nail pattern.
As well as a cpl other lil details. Have a cpl extra #2 bits also.
Sometimes you break one doing this. Stagger joints of the hb
& your wood subfloor, AND stagger hb joints too.!.!.!
Cement board is overkill here, and more brittle.
These are 3x5ft??? you MIGHT wanna shave, say, 6" off 2
sides of the 1st sheet and those along 2 conjoining walls
so if you use 12' tile (example) the tile joints don't mate with
the hb joints. *I* would. Most, will not bother. I am often called
back for more work, but never to fix anything I've done.
"Overkill Bill." Works for me, however.
Long as you are at it, I'd add a moisture barrier under the
hardibacker, of 6 mil. But it's "a corner that can be cut," so
most "pros" don't do this.
(I HATE most "pros." Gimme a Crafts-person any ole day.
Pros do include all [absolute] requirements to meet code.
Pros save money by not exceeding this, in many cases.
Sometimes, it's your money that they save- Sometimes not!
LOL! Pros can make some things possible/affordable, but
perhaps, not always as preferable.)
If you hire a Pro, ask,
~"What are the other things you or others MIGHT do 1st,
or in the process, that MAYBE I might have wanted, if
I knew about them now, but which haven't been mentioned
yet, for one reason or another...?" Most pros lose time with
extras/deviations. They make MORE by getting in, doing
basic same-O jobs, fast, and moving on to another of the
same thing. Cookie cutter production. It's not "wrong."
But it is "you."
Diagonal tile? EASY! But some "pros" really dislike doing it.
Do YOU know how to correctly choose where those tiles lay
so you don't end up with a slim piece on one side of the room?
I see "pros" do it all the time. Ewwwww!
Any chance you'll add cable heating? I'm on a slab, so
I'll be doing that as well. Tile gets cold. Can you insulate
under the wood floor? If so, do. If not, how cold is it there?
You might wanna pull up the wood, since it's just plywood,
and insulate 1st. SOMEtimes you can drill 2" holes and
blow insulation in.

>I just tore out the carpet- there is plywood on the floor- is a pier
and beam
foundation- at least that's what we called it when I was a kid-Should I
use a
1/4 in cement board under the tile- over the plywood floor and use
cement screws
to secure it every 6 in? Please advise, I appreciate the info- ty ahead
