Many DIY and some Pros take the shortcut of just screwing the backer down. With an uneven floor this will leave hollows under the backer which can cause tile to break later. Properly it should be set in thinset and leveled. This isn't to bad because the the 3 x 5 sheets are not that bad to handle. After that tape the seams with mesh tape and thinset.
