Re: [DIY] Refinishing bathtubs

I had professional guys do mine. The paint (like automotive paint) is nasty stuff. They had a fan they literally sealed to my bathroom window while they worked. Still the fumes were all over. They hire guys that know how to spray cars, because its a similar technique. They know how to use a spray gun. He also had one helluva mask!

I'm glad I didn't do it myself. The chemicals are in the paint. Everything was masked with tape (Chrome fixtures, walls etc) including the drain. Only the tub surface was sprayed. The surface was sanding, vacuumed and then sprayed. I didn't go in until he was finished. The fumes lasted for another (at least) 3 hours after he left.

I was happy with the job. They can do tile walls too.

Best Regards

Phil

Subject: [DIY] Refinishing bathtubs

Does anyone know what they are talking about in this:methylene chloride. Is it a chemical in the paint for the tub or is it a chemical used to strip the old paint. Currently purchased ar home depot? Is it only present when the work is being done and inhaled- they say masks are futile?. Does this get rinsed down the drain? Yikes! Ive thought this method of repainting old tubs sounded very dangerous healthwise. Is this only going to affect the refinisher or also leave residue for the homeowner with hot showers? Any thoughts?
