If my memory is right Dale is holding out on you. Severally years ago
there was some great advice on this group about finishing sheet rock,
and I think he posted some good instructions.
As all ready mentioned several thin layers is easier to work with than a
few thick layers. When it comes to the final finishing / sanding a terry
cloth towel cut into smaller pieces works great. I quartered mine.
Dampen the towel and work the edges to help feather them out. A lot less
dust than sanding. I did notice this can leave a fine grit on the wall
so you want to dust the wall real good or the paint will not stick good.
