If this is the type that is diverted by a pull on the spout, then the spout will have to be replaced. If it's the type that's in the wall, as Ray says, it'll have to be rebuilt. Fortunately, you can take it apart with out shutting off the water to the tub - hot and cold knobs feed the diverter.

Subject: [DIY] How do I divert all water to showerhead?
Hi, I've just switched showerheads to see if I can solve the problem of too much water still coming out of the tub faucet after moving the diverter lever to the shower position, but it is still happening. Sooooo, how do I go about getting all the water to come out the showerhead and not the tub faucet?
Thanks. Joyce
