My department manages and maintains thousands of pc’s. If a power supply goes out while the hard drive
has cached data or while it’s writing to the hard drive, it can indeed corrupt the drive enough that data on the
drive can be lost. However, in all the time we’ve experienced power supply failures, I can only recall once or twice where
data was actually lost. Dell had a run of Optiplex pc’s that had a bad production run of power supplies. We literally had so many
fail that Dell send us dozens of spare power supplies so we could get the pc’s back to the users as quickly as possible.
However, it’s extremely rare to destroy the hard drive unless the power supply had a power surge that spiked
the hard drive and fried the drives components but does certainly happen.
This is another reason to do frequent backups of your hard drive. It may not save the hard drive from having to
be replaced but drives are cheap where loss of data can be very costly.

Not so. I have turned off the power to my computer a number of times. No catastrophic loss of info. This is a new form of phishing.
