Exactly, we need 10" by 2" headers above these windows and we are putting them as high as they will work.
Perhaps they do not wish to cut the outside paneling is because they need to cut the studs high enough to place a tall header in
which would be above the opening and where the trim would cover.

Not quite sure why you would not wish to cut through to the outside panels. You can cut 2x4's with great accuracy a vibrasaw but it is a slow going process.

The sawsall (sp?) reciprocating saw cuts a ragged edge and is hard to control.
