Do it Yourself: February 2015

Has anyone tackled a heat baffle repair in the bottom of a viking
range (or other ranges with heat baffle between gas burner
and bottom of the oven)?

There seems to be the sheet metal oven bottom, then
a metal plate that screws to that, with a gap
between.
A small, damaged piece of insulation was there,
that had been trapped between the two pieces
of sheet metal.

I'm trying to find/fabricate the replacement insulation.
I have kaowool (refractory material), but not sure
if that will work, as well if the entire space between should
be insulated or just part.

Viking service from the company is notoriously
difficult to deal with. A new complete unit of the bottom
plate, insulation and baffle plate runs $300-$500.

Including a link to just the heat baffle, in case that helps.

Staples with the cooper color are electroplated with copper. Zinc coating on steel is called galvanized. They can be hot dipped, electroplated or painted. I have applied cold galvanizing paint. 24 pounds per gallon and quite expensive.

[DIY] Hot Galvanized

I purchased a box of staples recently for a pneumatic stapler. I noticed that the staples were silver in color. In the past, these same staples always had a copperish tone to it.

The description states "Hot Galvanized Finish". Not to be confused with "hot dipped", by the way.

Could it be that the previous lot of staples were electroplated instead of hot galvanized?

Just wanting to make sure that these are actually indeed galvanized. And not that this batch didn't make it thru the process, hence it not having that copper hue to it.

So, if it is broken, and you do NOT fix it when you try, have you done any harm? In most cases, "NO, because you learned something" (there are exception for the really stupid, and their videos and pictures are available on the internet and the morgue.

The float rises to the same level, however the depth of water in the sump is higher as it requires more water to raise the heaver float.

I only placed the washer on the float, no adhesive used. If washer falls off pump reverts to old cycle.

So long as the float can still rise. This would lower the levels at which the pump starts and stops. No problem.

I would not expect too much from a product warranty.....The most you will get is
product replacement.....There are too many factors involved in your assembly,
adhesion process to warrant any financial compensation......Pumps
