$400 to remove a toilet seems high. Typically there are two bolts (probably rusted) holding the toilet to the toilet flange and of course the water supply.
Biggest problem is things rusted/stuck together.
If you want to tackle this yourself:
Turn off water to toilet, flush, bail, or use a sponge to remove as much water as possible, both from the tank and the bowl.
You may have a 1 or two piece toilet. removing the tank makes it easier (each piece is heavy).
loosen/remove water supply line. (the shutoff valve does still work and shuts off water???)
Remove flange bolts (base of toilet to floor).
Lift off toilet.
Put a rag or something to cover the hole in the floor, prevent sewer gases in the house.
With the toilet loose, you might be able to use a plumbers snake or stiff wire to push the toy back into the bowl.
Get a replacement wax ring and new bolts (before you start) and set the toilet back on the flange (remove the rag covering the hole first).
New bolts, join two toilet parts if you took tank off toilet, re-attach the supply line. Check for leaks.
Mostly easy, except old plumbing is cranky and doesn't like to be taken apart and put back together. Things will break, requiring another trip to the hardware store.
For still less than $400. Go purchase brand new toilet, supply line and wax ring.
remove old toilet. Smash toilet to retrieve toy. Install all new parts. Discard toilet fragments in trash or make a redneck planter out of toilet.
You use a $1 toy to justify learning how to replace a toilet and perhaps updating to a lower water consumption toilet.
Isn't that how much DIY projects go? Just an excuse to buy tools and gain experience?
