Thanks for all the good advice, I'll throw the main breaker but even though we were assured the house was wired by a professional we've found enough little problems to doubt it :) i.e., the ones labelled Water Heater, do not cut power to the water heater. I'm going to try to replace the one socket on the small fixture at the end of the stairs but will have the electrician take down the big hanging light and rewire it.
