[DIY] Veterans discount at Lowes versus Home Depot

I have an ID for the local VA hospital but my health problems
are NOTT service related. For many years this was not a
problem and I always got a 10% discount at both my local
Home Depot in Pennsylvania which is about 1/4 mile from
our driveway and the one in Delaware where there is no sales tax.
(my VA hospital is in Wilmington, DE so I tend to shop there
on my way home from appointments.)

In the last few months both of the Home Depots I use have
stopped giving veterans discounts to veterans unless you have
an ID that indicates you have a service connected disability.

This has been their official policy for a couple of years
but it varied by store and by employee until recently.
In other words, I was sometimes I was able to get a discount
by just moving to a different cash register because it is up
to each Home Depot employee to look at your ID card and verify
you are a veteran EVERY time you go to a cash register
to pay

But that policy has now apparently changed and become more stringent
since I never get a discount anymore at Home Depot at either of the stores
I use.

I just discovered recently that Lowes, on the other hand,
has a much better way to administer their veterans discount.
You show them your VA hospital ID one time at customer service
and they enter that information into their computer system.
From then on, all you have to do is tell the cashier at the checkout
counter what your phone number is and you should get the discount.
They then look up the phone number to verify you are registered
as a qualified veteran.

Needless to say I am now shopping more frequently at Lowes,
especially for big dollar items, even though it is a farther drive
from my home. I discovered all this by chance a month ago when
we were shopping for a new washing machine. The Lowes
is in the same shopping center as the Comcast store so
after returning all of our Comcast equipment we decided to stop at
Lowes and check out which model & mfg to buy.

Since the Lowes and Home Depot sale prices were the same
and they both have free delivery, we ended up buying the clothes
washer at Lowes even though I can see the Home Depot
from our driveway.

My wife has a smartphone and it amazes me how easy it is now
to check prices for brand name products at local stores. She
checked the nearby prices while we were still in the Lowes.

We saved approx $60 on that one purchase and Home Depot lost
that sale. I will still buy small stuff from Home Depot because it is
convenient but from now on any large purchase we make, will probably
be at Lowes.
