If they are not pressure treated or some kind of naturally resistant wood (teak, cedar), I think you are wasting your time. If they are pine, they will definitely rot, unless you live in a desert.

I have some very long 4x6 wood beams.  I was thinking about using them side by side for a walkway.  I do not want them to rot using them somewhat like RR ties.  They will be next to a veggie garden so the less toxic, the better.   Is there a good way to do this?  Would Thompson's water seal work?  Anything else?
