Re: [DIY] Re: Plastic smell coming from AC

The AC coil is inline with the furnace in the ductwork, so same airflow path.

@Kraig: The nearest thing I can think of really is the smell of a band-aid once you take it out of the wrapper. Or a box once you take the outer plastic packaging off. The only other thing I can think of is it kind of smells like petroleum jelly. Though I don't have a ton of experience with what burnt plastic smells like.

@RJC: No, it's been off and on for the past few weeks. Basically whenever the heat got back up to around 80, we turned it on (heat/humidity gives my wife migraines so we use it year round as needed).

So more troubleshooting and an update:

-Last night we ran it for about 15 minutes, no smell.

-Today, we turned it on for about 10 minutes. The smell came back at the end of that time but it wasn't as strong. I immediately went upstairs -- the blower is in the attic above the master bedroom closet. No smells from there. I also went outside and checked the compressor, no smells around there.

-The blower fan is still on right now and there is no smell.

-This is also a different smell from the usual "first heater night of the year" smell.

I'm not the most versed in the process flow of central air. I know with the heater, the furnace is right in line with the blower and that's how the hot air is distributed. How does it work with an outdoor AC unit? And since the blower doesn't seem to cause any issue, is it probably the outdoor unit problem?
