Did the unit sit off for any length of time? I also live Cali..NorCal....and sometimes
it is off months,..then funny smell for a few minutes..
I think if any part of unit exposed to sun or heat some plastic outgas or surface accumulation of outgas products then blow away and no harm no foul..
A lot of plastics scare me as some contain such volatile ingredients with the mad
rush to use everything recyclable back into consumer products...I got rash from recycled
napkins once!!

We're still using our AC from time to
time here in California, as the weather's been hit and

the humidity was bad, so we kicked it on. Within a minute,

compressor outside was off). I also changed the air filter,

about 30 minutes and the smell didn't reappear. I'm
running the AC right now and it's been going for about
10 minutes with no smell.
I just wanted to sanity check that
this didn't sound like anything worth hiring HVAC to
check out unless it repeats? Could it be as something simple
as some pollen or debris got in the intake?
