I spent about half of last Summer at a friend's house,
with a train track virtually in her back yard, only about
70ft from the house. A short train (average about 10 cars)
came through twice daily, once being in the middle of the
night. This was a slow train, but still blasted for every
small road crossing, one located so that the blast was as
it passed the house. The train literally shock the ground,
and the house. I found the train to be one of the nicest
features of the location, which had a very close beach,
and a wonder view of Lake Huron, only about a hundred
yards from the house. The train would awaken me every
night, unsually well before it got near, when I could
only hear its horn, off in the distance. However, that
made it a gentle awakening, preparing me for the bone
shacking sounds as it passed. But then, its fading
rattle, roar, and horn blasts would ease me back to
sleep as it faded into the distance over the next
ten to fifteen minutes. I really liked that train.
