Take a plastic zip tie and bend it so it has a hook. thread it around the door strike (between the double doors. slide it around until you can get the end. Hold both ends and pull.

RE: [DIY] need help opening a locked door

If you can't pick it yourself (or know a guy who knows) you can drill through the lock.  It'll destroy the lock but that can be replaced and it's cheaper than a locksmith to come out and pick it.  Either way you'll need to replace it.

RE: [DIY] need help opening a locked door

That is unless they used a dead latch (double pin) style entry bolt and it is installed correctly.  If it is a typical entry knob set, a locksmith would have no problem opening it.  If it is a padlock, cut the hasp on the shed and replace it.

Try first using an old credit card to shim it. You slide the card in on top of the bolt, hold it down, and slide slightly in and out, to see if the lock is dead bolte. If not, the bolt will ride up over the card, and you can open the door.

Re: [DIY] need help opening a locked door

I was wondering if it was built or bought.  If built, perhaps the hinges of the doors could be removed.

Re: [DIY] Re: Wunderground Weather

That's really strange.  It seems to be working for everyone.  Are you sure you checked the upgrade box on the sign up page?  If you had to re-enter information on that page for some reason (handle already existed or password didn't match) then you had to check the upgrade box again.
Once you click the email link (or you may want to copy/paste into your browser) it will send you to a payment.wunderground page with an option for a "I just want a FREE account!" or "Is this transaction safe?" (which has a paypal button underneath it).  You skip all of that and you see a gift code area below.  Plug in the gift code and click on "Redeem".  Done.

[DIY] Just because we are cleaver

Many of us who have been life long do it ourself-ers begin to think we are sometimes cleaver.  I like to cruise through the web seeing what others are doing and it keeps me very humble,  Here is a short video clip of a gentleman and just one of his DIY projects that brought this old man back down to earth.  Enjoy.

There is no limit to the ingenuity and perseverance of a person with a
mission.

This miniature, driveable, street legal, 49 Mercury is something to behold.

[DIY] sagging kitchen sink base cabinet front face

Due to my not wanting to deal with it, water seeping up through the
middle of my beautiful kitchen faucet kept pooling over on the left
side of the sink so long that it detached the silicone I had sealed
around the sink with, and softened the *particle board* sides of the
cabinet so much that the front wooden face (solid oak) of the cabinet
is noticeably lower on the left. I tried pushing it back up, but of
course it would not budge.

I'm imagining that I could detach the face somehow, push it up, slap
some plywood over against the inside wall of the stupid cabinet
(supported by the sturdy plywood floor that I already had to put on
there because of a different leak...), and attach the cabinet face to
that plywood -- with some kind of little angle hardware on the
inside?? I'm not worried about what it looks like on the inside.

Does that sound do-able? How is the cabinet-face probably attached to
that stupid particle board - glue? I'm kind of in a time crunch, don't
have time to have to make multiple stabs at it.

(I replaced the faucet with one that doesn't leak, and it's all almost
dry under there, now)

thanks
Joy

Re: [DIY] Granite counter tops

I would rather use high quality 12x12 porcelain. I believe more resistant to stain but to each his own. Use a backer board, high quality thin set and stain resistant grout. At Menards I found a grout, cost about $40 per quart that has held up over three years, without sealing, on a often messy counter without any staining and it also was certified for food surfaces.

Draw out your tiles on the backer board before starting the project. We added a wood edge to the counter but do that before installing the tile. The wood was covered with a five or so coats of high quality polyurethane before installation and it also has not shown any water stains.

As a comparison, we have a large counter area with non-standard sizes. To have a professional cover the counter with a formica laminate would cost about $1,300. The porcelain cost about $250 as a DIY project. But the tiling takes planning and a good layout. Do not seal the porcelain - I don't know if you should seal granite.

Have fun and save a lot of money -

Gene
