Mission accomplished. A few days ago I got under the sink and took the pivot nut off and took the horizontal piece out. It looked like the piece that extended inwards from the little white plastic ball had rotted partway off. Today I went to the hardware store to see if I could get just that part. Naturally I had to buy a whole set of parts but it was still less than $6 I think. It isn't perfect but the drain is working again so thanks for your help. Joyce

Looking at the very bottom of the stem it looks as though there had been some sort of screw to connect it to the under-sink mechanism. Is there any way to get this thing reconnected so it works without calling in a plumber? I'm 70 and I do not believe this has *ever* happened to any other sink in the various places I have called home over the years. Right now I've got a large paper clip keeping the chrome part lifted a bit off the sink.
