My experience with vacuum cleaners is there are 2 basic types. One type has the impeller before the filter and the other has it after the filter.
Shop vacs fall into the category of the impeller being after the filter. They typically don't get objects stuck in the impeller unless you use them without the filter in place.
House vacuum cleaners mostly fall into the category of having the impeller before the filter. These are very prone to hard, sharp objects getting jammed in the impeller.  Its happened to me, it pretty well wrecked the vacuum cleaner, it was a drywall screw too.
About the only way to remove the foreign object is to open up the case unless you can see the impeller from the vacuum port. I'm not familiar with this type of vacuum to give any more insight into it.
There is a DirtDevil website. Searsparts.com has manufacturer diagrams for many manufacturers, all you need is the model number. If you happen to get lucky there may be a diagram that shows how the case comes apart. Usually its just a few Phillips screws.
      Best of luck,
      Steve

I accidentally vacuumed up a screw. Now when i turn it on, I can hear it circulating in the vac. I took the bottom part off and cleaned the brush, thinking that might allow it to drop out, but that didn't work. How can I remove the screw?
