[DIY] Re: Garage Door Opener Remote

Nancy,

The machine is the controlling factor. You can buy a new handheld remote control from Genie or a local store. There will be instructions in the package on how to teach the new remote to signal the machine.

We went through this last year when one of our remotes got lost. We also changed the code to open the door and had to reprogram all the remotes and the car to the new code/signal. The process may require two people. Husband up on the ladder in the garage. I was out in the driveway with the handhelds and the car.

We found very good instructions for our model Genie on the internet (9 years old). You can also call their customer support and request the instructions be mailed or emailed. And you can ask them questions if you don't understand the instructions or have a problem. I would call Genie and order the remote from them to insure you get one that is compatible with your older machine.

Now all you need is some young person to assist you in the process. Or if you are not afraid of the ladder, you might even be able to do both jobs yourself.

Then, if you find it entirely too frustrating or confusing, you can call a neighbor, or hire a garage door repair guy. But get the instructions and the remote from Genie before you decide to spend a hundred dollars to teach the remote the code/signal of the machine.
