I had read a few reviews on that model that suggested that the light doesn't activate on its own.  When you touch the touchscreen, it simultaneously activates the light as well as whatever button you pushed (Menu, Arrow Up, Fan...).

I opted for a different brand.  Wi-fi enabled.  Also has its own dedicated backlight button.

You are "overthinking": Actually, first push of up/ down does NOT change setting, it just activates display, biggest problem is low battery stops it from working; Fried circuits, I imagine, is rare (I would be more concerned w/ the $600 circuit board replacement bill on the heater than the $25-$50 DIY t'stat)
