Air conditioning can be added by adding an inside coil in the duct work at the furnace and running freon lines outside to the condensing unit (compressor). Certain specifications need to be verified first, though.
If the furnace was sized only for heat, the blower and motor may not be large enough. Secondly, there was a time when the duct work installed for heating only was too small for air conditioning. If you have 6" or larger ducts at each room, you are probably OK.
