[DIY] This old house

Is from the 40s, and atleast ive learned from recent visitors that its first long time owner was as nurturing as I. Sometimes I truly question why Im investing in ahome thathas been surrounded by newer higher homes and roads and walks.

So anyhoo, after much hard lanscaping work with grading and sod, I convinced DH to check out the still hidden behind a 2x4 basement window and sure enough after diggin down an area of a window well, there was a wood incomplete patch job with broken window. Wow. I think that coverup happened at my first remodel 15 yrs ago. So he has chosen to seal it up and review th e others. No lower windows open or give light to the small basement.

My question is- hes skilled but not a bricklayer, though he did lay the brick from the exterior, he used a caulk to seal that the smell penetrated the interior. It freaked us out due to toxins that he removed it and we (incl preschooler) stayed At hotel. Does anyone have experience with similar situation and best way to treat these old low windows. Are we doing the best thing. Will recover with dirt and sod.
