So, looks/ sounds like you have a 1-3/4" thick door hung on a jamb not   setup for that door size, judging by the location of the stop on the jamb, and   hinge screw locations. 
      -  If the stops can be removed and relocated to the proper     location to work with a 1-3/4 thick door, you can then relocate the     hinges to the proper location on the jamb face (instead of the     screws going into the facing board edge, and between the facing and     jamb). 
-  If stops can be removed, first move hinges to proper location, then     hang door and close and THEN determine proper stop location so that stops not     too close/ nor too far (too close can jam/ splinter/ rub)
- Removing stops will probably require scoring varnish with a utility knife;     (SOME jambs have the stops made onto them as one piece of wood
- Hope this helps; try looking at a door that is properly hung for     comparison
