Re: [DIY] spiders now

Found one of these outside several years ago. Had no idea what it was. It was a huge blue wasp, triple the size of the local yellow jacket wasp. Very armored with a huge stinger. It was almost completely blue. It looked to be one tough wasp.
Luckily it was dying so it had lost all its fight, gave me the chance to check it out. I have never seen one before or since. Rarely see tarantulas either but they do exist, just not many, more of a desert creature.
Apparently they use a tarantula as a host for their young, stinging it, leaving it paralyzed for the young to feed on. Its supposed to be one of the most painful stings around for a human.

We may have cut back on the wasps with Pyrethrins, yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!............or might be the weather.
So do you guys do spiders ?  Also pyrethrins??    I know they are in or under and maybe also in the mechanics of my trundle bed...........makes me squirmy.  And Pyrethrins won't hurt me  or my cat that sleep there...........right?  So I can spray the bed with them (and maybe sleep elsewhere that night?)  Or is there something better to kill spiders in a currently used bed?  Suggestions appreciated!!!!!.

Re: [DIY] spiders now

I've been bitten by them before. I was expecting the worse. I picked up
a top to a barrel that had been left lying around. When I grabbed it I
felt a needle like pierce in my finger. Looked down and and one of those
sneaky things was in the barrel top. My finger squeezed it a little when
I grabbed the lid.
Absolutely nothing happened to my finger or any other part of me.
I'm pretty sure they are some member of the Golden Orb Weaver family ,
although I was never able to identify them specifically. But the brown
black widow does look like them. When they are waiting for prey they
form a 4 point star shape with their legs. Makes them look very menacing.

Re: [DIY] spiders now

The area I work in always had these brown spiders, they are Golden Orb Weavers, spin a lot of web but are otherwise harmless but don't look harmless. They look like a brown, black widow, about the same size when they get mature and the web is strong like a black widow too. They got into everything. I work in a printshop and it got spider junk in everything. The area the shop is in is a dairy area, it attracts a large fauna of small insects for food for spiders. The area I Iive in , 25 miles from work, doesn't have the same insects at all.
We fought them for years. I asked a pest guy to spray for them and they did but the spiders are elusive. Most insecticides, specially the harmless types, you have to get on the insect for them to be effective.
The last couple of summers here in Southern California have been more mild than the previous summers in the 2000's. The hotter it gets the more these spiders thrive. The cooler summers really helped cut their numbers, nothing else.
Most spiders are harmless, just creepy. Unless you have brown recluse. I heard a lot of the country is having real trouble with them.
I don't know a solution for spiders unfortunately. Just telling my experience.

Have you ever seen what happens to wasps if you pour on a little gasoline?  The wasps must be made of Styrofoam.  The gas will totally dissolve the nest also.

[DIY] Re: Small Engine Carb fuel lines (Solved)

Thanks Ray, Terry, MM and Bob.

I went to a local hardware store as suggested (I'm not familiar with any lawn stores around here).  They had only two sizes in stock.  1/8" and 5/16".  The 5/16" matched one of the hose sizes.  The other hose on the carb (the hose that pushes the fuel into the tank) did not seem to match either one.  The internal circumference actually seemed to be between the sizes of the two available if that's even possible. I measured by comparing how far an ice pick would enter into each tube before hitting resistance. I made sure that I wasn't measuring via a flared end. And not to mention that the tube thickness was twice as thick as the tubes at the hardware store.

I really needed both hoses however I was able to get the blower working again by just replacing the one.  The 2nd hose I wanted to replace in order to also have a new one at the same time.... but also because I clipped the flared end for measurement purposes and figured it would be too short to reinstall.  It was a bit tricky and the line is more taught than I'd like but it's working.

A big credit to Husqvarna for having a rubber plug seated into the gas tank that can be removed and reinserted.  The 2 fuel lines get inserted into that plug and then the plug can be popped back into the fuel tank.  Much easier to deal with then trying to fish it tightly into gas tank holes.

I’m a professional pest control technician. We need to know 2 things before advising you. What is an A Frame, and what kind of hornet are you dealing with. It’s like saying that there is an animal in the back yard bothering me. No one can advise you until they know exactly what you’re dealing with.

Re: [DIY] hornets

There are a whole lot of different type of wasps across the different parts of the world. I replied earlier from my phone.
Here in California wasps, yellow jackets, form a nest with a narrow root that attaches to a branch or eve on the roof. They are super easy to detach without having to use insecticides. I was just spraying the nests on the eve of my roof a few weeks ago. I got stung on the hand, I don't usually. On these type of wasps, you really don't need to use insecticides, I had some so I used it. I just soak the nest with the insecticide and they don't come back to that nest.
I've seen other types of nests by other wasps in other parts of the US that have a wide base. I've also seen others that burrow. None of these types exist around here. Be careful some types of wasps are really aggressive. Looks like some type of wasps have a narrow opening with the nest being hidden inside. Here, the larva are on the face of the nest, easy to see and the wasps cling to the outside of the nest.
The types with a wide base would probably need a pyretherin based insecticide. That is made from the chrysanthemum flower plant. Its very non toxic. Deadly to insects but harmless to animals, including us.
If you kill the nest, scrape it down and wipe what is left with bleach. If you have a reoccurring nest, they have a pheromone marker they come back to. Keep an eye out for any reattempts to make a new nest. Most wasp species are widespread and are always looking for a place to nest. There is no way you can kill them all, all you can hope to do is dissuade them from making a nest where you don't want them. It takes a lot for them to get a nest started, if you kill it before they get much started, the season may end before they get another chance to start a new nest.
Its ignoring or not noticing a developing nest where they get out of hand.

You might try swiping the root of the nest with bleach after knocking the nest down.

I think they leave a pheromone that leaves a marker of where the nest was.
