And a swamp cooler is surprisingly effective in hot, dry climates. I lived in a house with one, and one month in the summer our electric bill was $15. (Note: we didn't use the dryer that month. Also, our water was un-metered.) The only time it doesn't work is when it gets to over about 105, and even then it's a lot better than outside.
