[DIY] Re: HVAC Filter Comparisons

After many hours of trying to understand the three rating systems, I've learned a lot and found that it is not possible to compare HVAC filters that are using different rating systems. MERV was created by ASHRAE (professional testing), FPR is proprietary to Home Depot, and MPR is proprietary to 3M. None of these has a comparison chart for the consumer to understand the various products. One important thing I learned is that the ratings being used do not tell you if they impede air flow, and that can reduce your HVAC efficiency.

Those reusable filters are a bad idea. We had them for a while. They filter the larger particles for about ten days. By then they are coated with the particles and can no longer attract and capture more particles. You can wash them as often as you like, but the inner core is nearly impossible to get clean, so the dirt just accumulates until the air cannot pass through at the proper flow rate. And if you use them for years, you will eventually see the stuff that passed through the filter asit is sprayed from your supply registers.

The search for reliable comparison information continues.
