Re: [DIY] Cooper pipes in Tennessee

A local church in Galveston has a copper roof. Its green. Its held up for over 50 years.  Don't sweat it.  Green copper is meaningless with regard to life.

Re: [DIY] Re: Cooper pipes in Tennessee

Yep, turning green is a natural process for copper.  Just look at the Statue of Liberty.  It does NOT weaken or erode copper.

Re: [DIY] Re: Cooper pipes in Tennessee

Some molds turn them greenish also..

If you want new "cooper" pipe...spray dilute vinegar solution (2 cups v/1 g water)
and wipe dry....

Not sure where in TN you are - we're south of
Nashville and it's VERY humid.  That alone might cause
the patina.  If the green is mainly around or under a
connection, look for a leak, but that's something
usually with some crystals that have precipitated
out of the water contact with the copper and has an
appearance of a leak.

Basically, I agree with Dale - he's trying to scare you
into a project that is not needed.  Copper pipes are good,
long-lasting pipes.  As long as they don't leak, which
you would have found out before, they'll last a LONG
time.

Re: [DIY] Copper pipes in Tennessee

Not sure where in TN you are - we're south of Nashville and it's VERY humid.  That alone might cause the patina.  If the green is mainly around or under a connection, look for a leak, but that's something usually with some crystals that have precipitated out of the water contact with the copper and has an appearance of a leak.

Basically, I agree with Dale - he's trying to scare you into a project that is not needed.  Copper pipes are good, long-lasting pipes.  As long as they don't leak, which you would have found out before, they'll last a LONG time.

Subject: [DIY] Cooper pipes in Tennessee

A friend bought a house in Tennessee and has been told that the copper plumbing in his new home will all fail.  He tells me that some of the pipes are green and that is very bad news.

What would make the metal turn green and is this really a problem?

If there's something in the local water supply that might accelerate normal corrosion, a water softener/filtration system might be a good investment.

Sounds like a scare job to me.  Copper always turn green due to natural corrosion.  It could be caused by the climate if it is or has been very humid, acid from something done in the home like making pickles and using vinegar.  In short there could be many reasons why his copper pipes have turned green over the years, but that in itself does not mean that they are about fail.  Tell him to have someone who is trustworthy inspect his plumbing.
