Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the reason for the cantilever was that 12 foot 2x10’s were too short for my plans, and I did not want to waste 3 feet off each of the joists, small redesign, and voila the bedrooms become 16 x 16 instead of 13 x16!

One other thing, on our previous house we added a second floor and cantilevered the second floor 3 feet out the back, passed all inspections including county architectural. The floor was 2x10 Fir joists 16 oc total joist length was 16 feet, 3 of which was cantilevered. Working with only a four foot deck I would imagine that your available cantilever would max out well under a foot.

Thanks for your reply. Food for thought.

Hi John,
How far you can cantilever out is usually determined by your local building codes. More than a foot or two will usually require an engineered design showing calculations and stamped by a PE. Long cantilevers are, in my opinion, always a bad idea, and should only be used when there is no other viable option.
Again, just my opinion.
