[DIY] Hard floor OVER carpeting?

 

We're a small family renting a nice townhouse -- unfortunately, the unit is carpeted throughout -- even the dining area. Which drives us crazy. Apart from tearing up the carpet and laying down hardwood, we're wondering if there is anything we can put OVER the carpet that would provide the practicality (and some aesthetic benefit). We've tried rugs, FLOR, but so far, haven't found the right solution. Mainly want to address the two hundred or so square feet of the dining area.
