A Lot, if you notice the neutral wire is the same size as the line wire, whereas the ground wire is a smaller size, the neutral wire is the return side of the circuit, while the ground is there for protection, it shunts the electricity in the event that there is a short, gives it a path other than you and will cause the breaker to trip.

If the wires are connected together, what difference does it make where they are connected together?
The fact that they are on the same bar in a main panel is of NO consequence, they still perform very different duties the moment they leave the main panel.
