[DIY] Re: To remove the tree or not.

Four years ago we were adding to the house but a Redbud was in the way. It had been planted by our daughter when she was little and is now about the size of yours. A more accurate measure would be about a 12 inch trunk. My wife couldn't bear to loose it so we moved it. Found a tree company that sells mature trees and has a tree spade. It will need to be about the biggest they make. They use the spade to make a hole in the new location. Drop the dirt by the Tree and then pick up the tree and drop it in the new location. After that root stimulant and lots of water. Lost a few branches but the Redbud is still living. Not a cheap option Approx $750 then but that is what SWMBO wanted.

Our problem is that there is a 15' dogwood tree that is right in the middle of the where the patio is going to be and we really hate to cut it down as it gives some shade so we are debating on leaving the tree, constructing the form for the concrete about 1 1/2' around the edge of the tree trunk and pouring the concrete. I did notice as we were leveling that ground out in preparation for the patio that there were only a few very small roots uncovered. We do plan on putting about 2-3 inches of #57 stone and then 3-4 inches of concrete. I'm concerned that the roots from the tree will eventually crack the concrete. Any suggestions?
